    Agreed. I always think upcycling works great for pieces that are damaged or broken and the only alternative is the dump but it’s a shame to paint over nice good quality pieces. I know brown furniture seems to be perpetually out of fashion but I think there is real beauty in natural wood grain shining through. Sorry what can I say? I’m a purest! :)

    The number on the pull is visible because the ring is upside down. Loosen the nut inside and flip it around 180deg and the number will be hidden. Casting numbers on 20th century hardware not that unusual - besides casting number sometimes there is a "made in england" or whatever, but always on the hidden side.
