Featured Candlestick, what do ya make of it?

Thinking about this one. It’s interesting. Too expensive but I like it. Any help on the who, what, when, where? British perhaps? French? German? Antarctican? The chain thing I think tends to be Continental if I’m not mistaken? The lynx’y lookin foxy creature is neat. Is neo classical aesthetic art nouveau a thing? lol. I’m lost on this one.

 

I’m seeing a whale oil lamp possibly. It would have had a hurricane glass chimney or globe. But if no place for a wick, fat style candle would be my guess. Thinking the chain might be a way of strapping it down to a desk or table, keeping it from tipping over on a stormy night ocean voyage. Ok, maybe that’s a stretch.

You nailed it.

 

The chains are quite heavy-duty. It looks as if it was meant to be lifted off the floor on occasion. I was thinking of a ship too, but the chains would not stop it from getting swung around.

Something valuable in there that rats etc shouldn’t get into? So there’d be a hook hanging from the ceiling…

Or a cleaner who hated cleaning under furniture (with a flashlight)?

A place where you’d get frequent acqua alta — high waters— like in Venice?

 

I think a swinging candlestick would be dangerous indeed. Some chains held scissors in addition to snuffers which could explain a heavier chain.

I’ve sat far too close for comfort to a swinging incense censer.

 

Still thinking those chains are too long(at least as seen in photo) to be hanging anything on. Anything would be lying on the ground. *shrugs*

here are a couple with chains, both are French. They attach in 3 places it seems, but on yours it looks like they would attach in only 2 places? looks like they are decorative only I like yours, I bet it is impressive in person

I can’t help thinking that the chains once had a real purpose. Maybe the top part of those types of candleholders was once removable so it could be hung from a long hook on the castle wall, like a sconce. And then screwed back on to use as a candlestick. Then later on, maybe the chains became purely decorative.

Edit—re the way we perceive things in photos.

Scrolling down when I was first looking at this, I could only see parts of the photos at a time, so I assumed the stick was much taller than it is — that it was actually standing on a wooden floor, not on a table. And that it was hanging from a hook in the second one — with a flashlight underneath it to show it was hanging.

Didn’t notice the chairs in the first one, nor the slack chain in the second one… so oops!
