Fine brass pots

Hello

I bought these small brass pots. Lovely quality with gilt interiors. No idea what they are used for.

One has an internal cover in a hinge and leather lining, the other a removable cover. Any ideas?

4.7cm height, 7cm base diameter.

They are lovely! Wondering if they were inkwells?

 

I was thinking the same thing.

 

I think inkwells too, likely had glass liners.

 

One may have been for sand...?

 

Maybe the one with the leather lining?

 

High probable, if so at all. I suggest that as I seem to recall that, in the days of quill pens an' their use, sand was used to help 'dry' the ink on parchment or vellum...

 

Maybe that one held sand, the other could have had a glass liner for ink.

 

I go with ink well and sand shaker which someone removed to sell separately? Or maybe the ink well liner broke and they decided to take out the shaker.
