In pix this looks more like pewter. Is it more gold colored in person? And how does Nuremberg come into it?

Hammered brass is my take. But I'm the one who thought it looked like pewter.

Nuremberg has been coming up in something I've been trying to learn about (16th century shell cameos) so was curious about its connection here.
