Featured Glass or tiger eye cameo? Please help!

Good morning,
This brooch is another wonder in my jewellery box. It looks like tiger eye, the shine moves through the carving, sometimes becomes dark brown sometimes light brown, depending on the light, the tiger eye / cats eye effect.
The interesting part is that it does not look like a stone, it looks more like glass. There is something securing the cameo to the black stone/glass, visible from the back.
The frame is made of yellow metal.
Any idea what is this cameo made of? can it be glass or stone?
How old is this cameo?
Is the lady in the depiction someone well known?

To my eyes, the cameo, a pretty generic lady, is tiger eye fixed on onyx or black glass background.
I'd have the mount tested, the half pearls seeming genuine, it may be gold.
Around 1890.

Agree on all points. The black background may well be black onyx, an assembled piece like this needs sturdy components. But glass can't be ruled out from photos alone. An unusual one.

 

Another vote for tiger eye on onyx, probably in gold, late 19th. There were a bunch of these "Generic Renaissance Lady" carvings then, but yours is a nicer carving with good detail. I like her a lot and can see why you picked her up!

 

Definitely worth checking. The gold looks like gold and the pearls almost have to be real.
