Can anyone read this signature?

    Anyone any info on this piece? I can’t read the signature. It’s dutch thats for sure.

    C.B. Engels. An amateur painter, so you probably won't find who C.B. Engels was.

    Rotterdam street scene with the Grote of Sint-Laurenserk in background according to the internet. @Any Jewelry can confirm. Often painted; may well be a copy of an earlier work.

    Yes, it is the Sint Laurenskerk, before Rotterdam was bombed in 1940. Painted in 1935, so that makes sense.
    The buildings in the painting are gone, as are the people who lived in them. Only the Laurenskerk was rebuilt, in the 50s and 60s. It almost wasn't, but I'm glad it was, Rotterdam lost so much of historic importance to the German bombs.

    Thank you for sharing. I was thinking utrecht but yeah rotterdam makes sense. Indeed looks very different now…

    The Domtoren has a small spire. You can't see it from the ground though, it is too small, looks more like a party hat.:playful:
