I am interested in whether the heavy. elaborate gilt frame with this H.M.Kitchell painting is more valuable than the painting itself.
The frame is 24 x 20 and the piece weighs about 15 pounds.

Looks like a nice period frame but would need to see the back. Is that damage at about 2:30?

Thanks for your input. I'm posting the small damaged are and a photo of the reverse.

It is difficult for me to see whether the frame is actually gilt or if it has been painted with bronze powder (as many gilt frames have). I am basing my observations on the fact that it has been "regilded" in paint.

If it is truly a gilt frame and "unrestored" that changes things - However, it doesn't look like it is gilt anymore. It might have been at one time, the quality is certainly there.

The basic construction and modelling of the frame is of the better type and as a standard size, more desirable than an oddball size for sure. The damage you illustrate would be considered insignificant to a person looking for a good frame of this type and wouldn't really affect the value.
Whether it is more valuable than the painting? Unless the painting is only worth a couple of bills, I'd say no - although, if that is the case, and money is the ultimate goal here, you might make a few shekels more by splitting them up and selling them individually. We are talking just a few hundred though, so you have ask yourself is it worth it ....

Think blooey has covered this quite nicely. It is a nice legitimately old frame so definitely has some value. It is not terribly valuable and does enhance the painting so keeping them together or splitting them is probably a toss-up decision.

My grandmother had a painting in a similar frame. I am still kicking myself for not taking it here to my place after she passed. It was a lovely image of a girl with her back facing the viewer peering out in to the distance of shrubbery, trees and such.
    Very peaceful.
