I just measured it & it is about 7/8" across when the handles are closed & about 1 1/2" when handles are apart.
Actually I just tried it & even with my gnarled arthritic hands I could operate very easily with one hand.

I believe these are hand forged & the mark is the maker's name. Is there a name for this type tool? They are 11 1/2" long. BTW if you can't help...
