That looks like a piece/panel on the doors of an Asian cabinet that friends shipped back from a trip to China. This was back in the 80s so I'm stretching my memory. Both doors had round carved inserts that looked similar to your piece. They rode in equestrian competitions and that was the appeal to them.

Thank you for your answers....My original thoughts were that it was Chinese.

I can see this as a panel or insert on a door

I doubt it is insert in doors of a cabinet. It looks very thick and heavy. I would guess rather underside of a coffee table.

I would look for the "key" piece that this could constitute a puzzle.

The animals may be camels, not horses, looking at the wide muzzles, short blunt ears etc. so consider the possibility of a mideastern origin.

I think the key piece is in first pic, end is in lower left corner of pic. One I'm looking at is the lower of the twin beams, try pushing from one end then other. When it is slid out the piece above can drop down and unlock things. Anyway it is bound to be one of the long pieces on the lower tier, either on the end or 90 degrees around from it on the side. Free the poor camels!

    "Free the poor camels!"

But be careful....I hate it when I figure out how to unlock a puzzle and then can't get it together again!

Mm mm, sry. Could we see a photo of the underside, maybe a clue there. Maybe if you pick it up, one of the camels can be pushed downward a bit to unlock something else.
