Featured 12 foot Chinese embroidered panel with figures

I believe this is Chinese, maybe from the 1920s or a little before?

I don't see really super quality on the figures; the embroidery on the edging is very nice, but not custom. For a panel of its size and age, it is in very good shape except for the dark blue edging as shown, which has some damage/decay.

I know *a little* about Japanese characters/lohans/heavenly characters, but haven't identified these 8 as yet.

Any direction would be helpful - I'm just doing a little research for my elderly neighbor for the textiles I'm threading today. I believe larger panels like these (12'x18") are desirable, but the horizontal shape is kind of awkward (to me).

I'll sell them for her if it makes sense, so any details are welcome, thanks!

The Royal Ontario Museum has one of the best collections of Chinese textiles in the world. Maybe you could run your photos by them?

Thanks komo - again, it's not mine :)

My very special 87-year old neighbor keeps pitching these things my way... Her mother loved "classical" frippery (which she hated growing up) but she's totally hip to the fact that Mom had pretty good taste.

She's just curious how good it was :) it's very cute and I love her for it. But it's a stretch for me lol

It's nice, but they made tons of these & I've seen much finer workmanship.

I'll have to photo mine....it's got gold thread.....& well....you'll see.

I agree. It's not a stunner, but it's in good condition and large, so... She knows it's only worth what someone will pay for it

Thanks, warms my heart to hear from you, et al. :)

This is not something I collect....so it should be where it should be, but it's not.
    I'll bet it's in a box under a box behind a box....so I'll look there & in the meantime I'll focus on yours/hers..!

Woohoo! you found it! Very pretty - I like it better than my friends...

Did anyone disagree with my estimate of the 20s? Since I couldn't locate a comp - I'm just WAGing: estimate it as sell-able at $150??

I'm going to back track, a little.
On further examination , her flower border with a bit of metal thread , looks as similar in quality to my flowers, and the rest is better by half of what I first thought.
Size does matter and I'd think $15o...is too low for her piece......
I'm also thinking early 1900's.....but I can confirm that yet !
As I mentioned this is not my area of collecting....and I've not yet found my longer one either.....so stay tuned.

& thank you for your appreciation !

Can I take a look at the back and connection of the hem? (I would like to see the method of needling of connection.) Thanks.

Ah, but think how this would look mounted above a bookcase, or laid across the foot of a single bed. Methinks it would look lovely...

I'm trying to learn. What would you expect to see? Are you looking for the stiches to go through the silk to determine age?

12 ft is a long piece of embroidered fabric! Scoutshouse, if you do sell for your neighbor, you might consider putting something in the photo for scale. That is one large piece of embroidery.

I would think vintage at a minimum, Moreotherstuff's suggestion to send photos to the museum might result in some insight.

Maybe Asian Fever will have ideas, too.

Best of luck, and nice of you to help your neighbor.

    stitches.
The first one looks like republic to me, I am not sure.

The second looks modern. There're something similar selling in China.

The third one should be republic period or before period, not because of the wear, but because of the pattern of tassel.
