hi guys, something else i bought last week

only just noticed the date on the back (quite faint)

everything has been glued including back board, so cant take apart without ripping

whoever framed it copied what was inside, as you can just see through a gap

near - (something) 1846 (is what i see)

painting (not frame) measures 10" by 8

subscribing to arroncabs to interesting to pass under a tenner rule !

    any thoughts appreciated

Can you tell what happened to create all those white dots in the "sky?"

The mat has to go - terribly acidic.

And if that's cardboard on the back, that should probably go too.

Aquitaine Is What It IS! But NEVER BORED!

I think many if not all of what you're talking about are either blue or gray SKY, but I totally agree.....quite a bit OVERDONE!!!!! THEN AGAIN, there's also the remote possibility :):jawdrop::hilarious: I could be (GASP!!!) WRONG!!!!! tee hee!

Hi bakers, the white specs are actually the original waterpaper sheet colour.

I've heard that's how watercolours are done, using the white of the paper for the white in the landscape

Gonna be hard to separarate cause it's all in a glue sandwich !!

Yes, the paper showing through often subs for trying to use white paint, but as Aquitaine says above - way overdone, looks strange.

Too bad about the glue. :(

Yeah I'll have to make a judgement call on whether to try to separate, should be ok if I do it gently

Kind of impressed its 170 years old though !

Hard to tell from the pics, but it looks like it's done on a hot-pressed surface that doesn't have a lot of 'tooth.' This paper is even less forgiving than a cold-pressed sheet, in terms of applying transparent pigment.

The acid staining is likely influencing the color and darkness of the transparent washes, but the light blue strokes in the sky looks to be opaque white mixed with the blue. This could explain why those areas are brighter and a bit discordant with the rest of the piece.

Sky may look a bit messy, but this wasn't done by some weekend hack, IMO.

It think it would look better with a [slightly] lighter background as the artist intended, but I think you should be quite happy with it, Chesaroo.

I think those peeks of light blue reflect the type of day the artist was trying to convey.

Shame it can't be separated from the backer to prevent further damage.

I love it, @charlie cheswick ! You sure do have your share of punters and anglers in your neck of the woods, judging by your previous threads :)

It's possible to separate, but not if it's old brown glue (water soluble), if it's very brittle or...

Some of the white looks like scratches... I was able to restore a scratch on this watercolor on board, using water soluble felt markers. The kind with a good tonal range and near clear to dark in each.

I can still spot remnants of the scratch running through the little red rock in the blowup.
