I found this dusty oil painting in the attic of the latest clearance.

Its of Minehead Church & Steps, Somerset
    Signed G. Stevenson 1929

    The frame measures 19" X 13"

On the back in ink it says Minehead Church & Steps, visited 1928 painted 1929.

In pencil in the middle it says Mrs Banning call to see Sat 9/6
    (Then I think)
1" level 1" and something else.

The pencil may or may be not a potential purchaser.

So what ya think, any good, professional or amatuer, known artist ? worth putting in a sale or let it go for pennies?

Here is a more recent photo of the place in real time from a slightly different angle and probably 90 years apart.

I might add the St Georges flag is on the church so it may have been painted on or just after St Georges Day.

Just noticed in the pencil a sketch of a frame so this was probably the frame for the potential customer. and explains 1" x 1"

An amateur, but an attractive subject on a bright, sunny day.

Not a fully trained artist. (You can see how he struggles a bit with linear perspective and hasn't mastered the use of shadow to create depth.) But his work is charming. Fully of immediacy. We stand next to him at the foot of the lane as he paints that charming scene on a sunny day. That said... Local interest only I'd imagine.

The careful notation about when seen & when painted and the one about calling on Mrs. Banning make me think painter was a she.

Thank you. Hate that "he" thing by default. Did you notice painting has what appears to be three different hands? Artist's signature, description and notation.

I did. I don't think the painter wrote the calling on Mrs. Banning line.

I'd like to think Mrs Banning had it gifted by the artist or she bought it and was having it framed.

I can't see too much merit in it and wouldn't put it in a sale. Sorry.
