Purchased this recently. I know it is a reproduction made by Alva Studios in 1955. The seller said it was called The Egg Tooth, but I only have his word on that. Looks Mesoamerican to me? I’m wanting to know if this is a copy of a museum piece. If it is, I’d like more about the piece it is a reproduction of. Finally what this might be worth. It said wood and jade mask, so I suppose. I have no idea about the Olmec. I was just curious and did some searching.
Olmec it is! Thank you. https://anthro.amnh.org/anthropology/databases/common/image_dup.cfm?catno=30.2/ 9373 Egg Tooth 06 by MahlonBlaine posted Feb 23, 2019 at 7:42 PM
If you look at the chin, there seem to be attached bits of what the website attributes as jade. It make me wonder if at one time this wasn’t covered completely in jade and/or other stones.
Here is a similar looking (not exactly the same) Mayan mask that was covered in jade. https://traffickingculture.org/encyclopedia/case-studies/museo-nacional-de-antropologia-theft/
Great observation. I think you may be right about that because the placement of the jade pieces are odd.
