    Hello everybody,

I just bought these 2 opaline vases online.
    Very nice green color.

I immediately thought about Baccarat when I saw them,
but that's really only based on a feeling I had.

Could anybody tell me more about it?

I believe they are definately French, ca. 1860-1880 maybe.
    Handblown, pontilmark has been polished.
3 Gold rims. (bottom, top, and middle).

    Thank you very much!

I'm glad you posted them, R Antonis

I never would have thought Baccarat-French but looking around google i can make a connection Portieux Vallerysthal, so thanks for opening that door :)

Most of the Baccarat I saw was footed. These vases have a similar shape, but not the same surface. I think they're called baluster vases.

Ok, typed laboriously on my phone (so if I'm repeating other info, it's not because I'm not reading posts - whew)

I can't tell from your picture, is the pontil as nice as this one? Close to round?

When I googled images for Baccarat opaline, I was surprised at what came up. Most of it was what I would have considered to be Czech or Bohemian. People were calling it Baccarat. Not sure all of it was.

Well, the ones I found that came close were these:

Also, but that's just a feeling too haha... or call it a stupid thought.
I don't see much bohemian glass or bohemian opaline that isn't decorated.
Just plain glass (except for the gold rims). But I feel like it's too little decoration to be Bohemian. It's very possible that that doesn't make sense haha.

But these are different than yours.
The quality of glass is different.

You didn't answer, does your have a very large polished pontil that is perfectly round?
The ones you posted do. I don't see it in yours. What I see is very small, and the glass doesn't seem up to snuff.

From the one in the link you posted. You can just see the pontil.

So are these jadeite with satin finish? Not opaline...?

At the very least, i now know what a baluster vase is :)

Jadite in color, but not true jadite glass.

I always think of Jadite as heavy kitchen glassware. I might be wrong.

I see a lot of czech glass jewelry components and other items like finials and sculpture described as jadeite, but you are right, i think. Usually they're cast like Fire King.

Back to Opaline, then? The antiquarian

Milk Glass, (G.F.): Is an opaque white glass. True Milk Glass has the look of white porcelain. It was first made in Venice during the 14th or 15th century.

Milk glass with an opaque white appearance is usually made with tin oxide. Milk Glass with a semi-opaque white appearance is made with ashes of calcined bones. This kind of glass is sometime called; Opal glass, Opaline glass, and Milk-and-Water glass.

In the 20 century "Milk Glass" was formulated in blues and pinks yet still called Milk Glass even though it is a oxymoron. I never saw a cow give pink or blue milk!

Chrysoprase Baccarat some really good information here!

To confuse things even more... Chrysoprase/Chrysophrase is a gemstone:

Chrysoprase (also chrysophrase) is a gemstone variety of chalcedony (fibrous form of quartz) that contains small quantities of nickel. Its color is normally apple-green, but varies to deep green

Baccarat coined it for their green opalescent glass.

Here's a pontil very much like Cluttered's - that does holler Baccarat to me.

Not schooling you, R.A. - I'm schooling myself bc I know this'll come in handy sometime - good thread.

    Hi,
Just always called that jade glass. Jadite etc were company names.

    Hey everybody!
    Thanks for all the response.

I have made some new pictures of the rims and pontils today.
Also the true color is visible way better now.

About the pontil, (metioned earlier) seems like one is small and one is bigger. 20170402_130656_resized.jpg 20170402_130703_resized.jpg 20170402_130912_resized.jpg 20170402_130845_resized.jpg 20170402_130930_resized.jpg 20170402_130956_resized.jpg 20170402_131020_resized.jpg
