Picked these up together. 1 is a miniature seed pot but not sure who made it..maybe Hopi? Pot is 1 1/2" tall, 2 3/4" across. The next is odd. It is 2 7/8" square. The center has a knob thing that measures about 1". I know some tribes used birds...Santo Domingo? Zia Pueblo? I just don't know what this square thing is.

That looks like someone's inventory number on the bottom of the little pot.
I wonder if it was a well organized private collection or a museum...?

I agree, and I cringe over defacing a work with such marks... unless it's in removable grease pencil or such.

I think your guesses are good. I also get a modern Hopi vibe, from the square thing, maybe. The NA brainiacs will straighten us out!

Meanwhile, that bird and bug is very appealing. I love it. Cute, cute, cute.
    But what *IS* it????

I thought I posted a reply  When I bought these, the square piece was inside the seed pot. But I don't think they go together.

Is it possible if people who are collecting some stuff just wrote the number on the items? And of course nobody will do it in museums. But it is possible if some old person wrote some important numbers. I was reading, that long time ago, some old people were used do it: write account or SS numbers or other important information on the bottom of not expensive items of home decor, just in case they will forget it. I think here is the same, because if I am right the sign is covered with some clear coat - probably glue and it made exact for protection this information during washing - cleaning this pot.

I've seen deaccessioned museum pieces numbered/marked exactly like that little pot is marked.

 In Russia, if somebody would do it with museum exhibit - their hands will be torn off! :joyful: There should / could be attached only removable tag with information.

Hopefully I will be able to sell this pot. Can anyone pinpoint the tribe?

The number appears to be on a blob that was added to the pot. Is it the same material? I wonder if it's something that can be removed.

Numbers are commonly added to archaeological museum pieces as well as on privately held items. Some commonly used materials are B-72 and B-67 which have different solvents but protect the items and are reversible. You put a coat of one, let it dry, use archival inks to label and them top with the other. Now some people might use nail polish but it's not archival.

Probably half of my personal collection is labeled in a similar way using my own numbering system which corresponds to catalogs of photos and information on each item. (and maybe I'll get the rest labeled one of these days:))

Your first piece seems to have a word etched into the bottom and then is either worn or scratched over. Can you make it out?

Square thing is a napkin ring holder. The rings that once accompanied it may or may not have looked like the donut bird.

I guess maybe it's just scratches but this is sort of what I see in part.

Might be something with the first letter, but all I see is peeling polychrome
