What do you make of this, very heavy solid wood small 18 inch high 3 drawer chest with brass edges and a brass inlay pattern on the top.
Brass foldaway drawer handles, they fold flush with the drawer front.

My feeling is its Arabic and maybe for use in the cabin of a ship. (that is just a guess)

    I don't know the wood.

Its odd that the previous owner was a retired saturation diver based mostly in Brazil.

These Hoshiarpur chests were sold all over the world, especially in the 1970s-90s. Made in the style of British campaign chests, but not used by military. They just look very nice in people's living rooms.

davey, these got sold mail order like mad in the 70s and 80s. Not cheap either. As AJ says, in the style of a campaign chest. Very saleable.

I bought one in Karachi, 1979. There were dozens of styles to choose from, mine has three drawers across top, two in next row, one on bottom. Drawer Handles are brass ormolu?, stirrup-shaped. Wood same as OP’s, but more brass inlay all over. I just looked at it, would get pic but I’d have to move some things. Same size as op’s. These were very well-made, well-finished; mine looks like day I bought it.

The funny story about mine is that the store did a fantastic job of packing it, took a while to do, and I was confident the extensive packing would protect it on the Navy destroyer’s long and probably stormy trip back to SC, USA. I got a taxi back to the pier and carried the heavy package across the quarterdeck, greeted by the watch officer, a Chief Fire Controllman in my Department. As the Senior Watch Officer, I had given instructions that all packages carried aboard must be checked for contraband (drugs were a big problem in Karachi.) He did his duty and cut off all the neat cardboard and paper packaging, then opened each drawer. A bit disappointing, but he was obeying my orders to the letter!

Think I took a photo inside one of the Karachi furniture stores, will look, I just remember one wall was mostly covered by these chests in many different styles, but all had the same beautiful, dark hardwood, and the workmanship was top-quality, yet I don’t think I paid over about $200. If that, in 1978.

    Hello all,

My grandmother has this same piece and I’m looking for an appropriate value as she is trying to sell it.
Any updates on possible value and origin?
    Thanks!
