I know this carving represents Hear no Evil, Speak no Evil and See no Evil.
It has been in the family for approximately 80 years. It measures 4-1/4" wide x 2-5/8" high. Can anyone tell what the material is? It is very heavy. There is also a little hollow section on the left side. Could it be an inkwell? Any information would be great.

Alabaster would be my guess too. My thought on purpose is to hold vestas in the little well & use that pitted mystery object between Speak & See as a striker. Except the well seems very small. Certainly not for ink but could hold a pen.

Looking at what the Internet has to offer on vestas, they seem to be pretty skinny. Still...?

Chinese soapstone imo. I agree, it is old.
