Any thoughts as to age and origin of this necklace, and is the stone carnelian?
I saw a very similar one on ebay described as Turkish Art Deco Carnelian. Turkish and carnelian seems reasonable to me, but I wouldn't call it art deco.
    Thanks.

Deco, schmecko. It needs a sunshine cloth on it. I don't think Turkish. Hm.

Turkish influence to be sure, but that's a sister clasp. Did Turks ever use those?

Thanks everyone. No plans to polish other than with a sunshine cloth. The similar one I saw on ebay also had a sister clasp.

It is a lovely Turkish Kurdish traditional niello, foxtail chains and stone necklace. It was made in the region around Lake Van, in the east of Turkey.
Van is a multi-ethnic region. The lake has always been a tourist destination, and the local Kurdish silversmiths kept up with the latest developments in jewellery findings etc. The sister hook clasp, with two hooks which overlap each other, was mostly used in the 1930s-40s.
Niello is found in most Byzantine influenced parts of the world, btw.

I love this Kurdish style, and have several sets. My favourite has niello decorations only, very detailed though. The others have a variety of stones.
One of my bracelets is mounted with amber, so it would be worth checking if your stone is amber too. Does it feel cold or warm to the touch?

Than you for the great, detailed info AJ!
It is cold to the touch, definitely stone, not amber.

Then carnelian it is.:) Carnelian is a special stone in Islam, because the prophet Muhammad wore a ring said to be set with carnelian from Yemen. If you google 'aqeeq' or 'akik', you will found more info on it's meaning.

Everything leads back to cats in the end. ;)

A friend had a Van, you could NOT keep the daft thing out of the bath.

    Hi,
My Siamese was always jumping in the shower, when she did it the first time it was like the shower scene in "Psycho".

Van cats like water, unlike any other breed. Except apparently crazy Siamese.
