A Canadian mystery medallion , token or coin thing

Anyone know what this was for?

 

I love little mysteries like this!
What do the words around the edges say?

 

I see 2 dates - Feb 3 1880 and Feb 9 1881.

 

If I could find where I put it down, I'd loupe the blasted thing.

Anyhow, this is one of the closeups.

 

Interesting little love token, the arrow at the bottom points to 1881, and I do see another date too. I look forward to someone here who can read the top line!

 

It's something like three graduated upright strokes then RD then three more graduated upright strokes.

Then N Canada. And the Feb 9 1881 date. There's faint writing on the left too. P A something N.

And an upright arrow below 1881.

Could the top line be this:

" ((( RD ))) " as in someone's initials.

This one looks personalized as a love token, rather than a magneto battery.
