A French(?) wood, nesting(?) sort of piece...what is it?

The piece was purchased in France approximately 70 years ago, it is egg shaped, and the top 3rd of the piece is removable, like a nesting doll, nothing goes inside though. It has what looks like a band of 3 brown chickens playing instruments (banjo, accordion, and a cello or a base). There is an artist's signature on the piece, it looks like it is F. Disp or F. Bisp. Any thoughts on this mystery?

Might be the container for a skittles/ten-pin game, perhaps circa 1930s, they were usually of Eastern European manufacture...

Good point, since it's approx 12 inches tall. I was just assuming it's full of more "eggs" in diminishing sizes, since OP called it a "nesting" sort of piece.

Open it up and show us more pictures @RobWings ! Could it be papier mache instead of wood? More pics!

Thank you for all the input! It's definitely wood. There are no other pieces on the inside. The "Egg" is at my girlfriend's place, I'll post some more pics the next time I am over there.
