An Ansonia swinger clock from 1883. Just love it! It's got the classic Victorian theme of traditional beauty wedded to machinery. Hope you all like it as much as I do!!

Well I wasn't sure what to expect with the title 'a pair of swingers' but LOVE them!

That makes a pretty big statement. Do you think it was tasteful in its time or nouveau riche?

This was an example of Ansonia’s foray into pushing the latest blend of technology and art to increasingly wealthy 1880s consumers. I would think that Ansonia viewed this as elegant, although I couldn’t say whether it was meant to appeal to a family descended from 17th Century Huguenots or a late 19th Century robber baron or even a wealthy clerk. Certainly there were cheaper clocks to be had.

We'll just say "New Money" then.

My grandad had a marvellous pair of swingers, said he found it dangerous to sit down in a deck chair ?

Never quite sure what he meant ? :)

I'd rather the clock than find out. The clock isn't to my personal taste, but I bet someone thought it was the bees knees once upon a time.
