    Hi all,

I'm new to this community, prompted by the discovery of an old wooden mask, probably decorative, that's been uncovered after many years in the family. I'd like to be able to identify it. How do I go about posting a photo to see if someone in the community can help.

Thanks. The photo shows the carved wood wood mask.jpg mask. It's about 8" high, 12" wide including removable ears. It's been in the family for many years but no one knows anything about it. Any info would be much appreciated.

It is a Gara Raksha mask from Sri Lanka, representing a demon. These Raksha masks all have cobras on the top, Gara Raksha has three, others have more.

"* Raksha Mask – Used to perform Raksha dances in Kolam Maduwa. According to ancient chronicles, Sri Lanka was earlier ruled by a race of Rakshasas (devils) whose king was Ravana of the legend Ramayana. These Rakshasas were able to assume various forms which now the masks depict. There are 24 forms of Rakshasas but only a few are performed in Kolam dance. These masks include the cobra mask, the mask of a bird and the mask of the demon of death."
