Hi all. I'm considering purchasing or bartering for these two pieces. The ring is marked 14k (there appears to be a crown with a D in it), and I believe the stone is a ruby. It's a size 5.5/6 and I think it is 2.5 ounces. The cross pendant has one of the old hallmarks for 18k gold on the clasp. Sorry the reflections killed the pic! The corss piece weighs about 1.7 ounces, is about an inch long, and I believe has a chrysoberyl, not blue topaz, stone. I've done the math for scrap value but am wondering what you experts think they're worth given the stones, marks, design, etc. Thanks!

    the ring is lovely :)
    the cross is butt ugly:yuck:

it only matters what you think they/re worth....
but sometimes the gold weight....is the start and end of it all...;)

The ruby will be 'created'. What makes you think the blue stone is a chrysoberyl? It's hard to know what color it really is with photos taken on a blue background.

    Which old hallmark?
    Ditto?

If you stay under scrap value, you can't go wrong.

To make a short story long, ;) the guy who was selling it, a vendor of good reputation, told me it was a better stone than blue topaz--that he'd forgotten the name, but it started with a c. My girlfriend identifies gemstones pretty well, but she isn't up on current prices. She immediately said chrysoberyl after seeing a picture and added that she came across them in a variety of colors when working at a jewelry store years ago. When I told him, he shouted, "That's the one!" So I'm wondering how much more the chrysoberyl is worth than the topaz when set in a gold piece.

I agree and figured as much before I posted, but the guy selling it rightfully wants to get more than scrap. I've bought coins from him before; he's pretty reasonable. I want to start investing more in gold jewelry. The problem is retail markups are ridiculous, and there's a lot of shady dealings with online sellers. The pawnshop folks often get insulted if you lowball them or question authenticity. It's a whole new world of dealing for me. Scrap value is straightforward but when there are gems in the pieces I'm way out of my league. I'm learning, though, and this site is a great resource. As for the mark on that piece, I think it was an Austro-Hungarian one. The vendor told me it was 18k and showed me the mark in a reference site on his phone.

Wish I knew! I didn't make a deal on either piece and didn't have my diamond tester with me. I'll bring it next week, though, in case he still has it.

The style doesn't looks old enough to be Austro-Hungarian.
Antique, or any gold jewellery? If you're not going for antique, it is best to research which vintage or recent style sells.
