A small Book Shaped Compact dated 1846

I am guessing this would be a compact as there is a mirror inside but maybe used for something else. The box is made from a heavy paper material like cardboard and covered in velvet. The mirror is in the inside top and on the bottom inside of the box is written Dec. 25th 1846. Someone covered that in tape to preserve it I guess. The box is 2 1/2" long x 1 5/8" wide. It is really in pretty amazing condition for being 174 years old. Any thoughts on what it was used for?

 

Try patch box, rather than compact.

 

Not literally a patch box? In 1847? That's a bit late, isn't it?
