Featured A whole bolt of Mylar

How would one go about dating or even authenticating vintage fabric?
This bolt was found between rafters in the attic of this estate.
Appears to have never been removed from package. Until I came along

 

Hemster, I see that someone has written "Mylar" on the side of the tube, but what you're showing isn't what I think of as Mylar.

Just an opinion, but to me, it looks more like one of the fabric-backed "faux leather" materials - used for crafting & even upholstery sometimes.

Wait to see what others have to say.

 

My first thought was a faux leather also. Never heard of Mylar, looked it up and I'm conflicted. It's a thin material, no stretch, almost like paper.
But then again, I have no idea how long it sat in the rafters...
There's many yards.

 

The thing that comes to my mind with Mylar is balloons - you know the kind:



Unless there's a different kind of Mylar with which I'm not familiar (???)

 

Thicker than the balloon material. I have no idea where to go with this.

Am I seeing correctly that it is a metallic gold color? Maybe some Christmas decorating use? Is it water repelling? Maybe use for wrapping big empty boxes for outside displays or something?

 

I thought Mylar was the plastic the librarians used to cover books.

 

Looks like old disco dress fabric to me!

 

You could take it to a local fabric store - Is there a Joanne's nearby? Some of the older employees may know.

 

Could it be some sort of wallpaper ?

I looked it up last night and found that this mylar material was used a lot during the Hollywood Regency era. There were many different applications. I believe even the gold threading like in this piece.

 

Mylar is a polyester material (the name Mylar is copyrighted) used to produce OTHER fabrics, plastic sheeting, etc. So actually calling a fabric Mylar is not correct, but it is very commonly used this way. A balloon is the purest form in common use and that can be called Mylar as it is not woven/integrated with other substances (though some may be applied to the exterior). Think of a WOOL sweater as opposed to a WOOL BLEND sweater.

 

But wait! This just got really cool..
I tried to pull the bolt out of the paper to get a better looksee, and out pops other textures.
I picked at the edge a little bit and it peeled off the backing, ITS THE BALLOON material! Like a layer of gold leaf is what it looks like.
I'm so excited I don't know what to do with this sh*t but I'm so excited!

 

It would make great gift wrap.
