A) Whose logo is this and b) what was it used for?

This is a little chunk of brass with what resembles a Masonic logo in the center, and with global city names rayed out from the logo. It ought to be a coaster, it's rubberized, but it's too small. Paperclip holder?

 

Something for knowing what time it is there when it is this time here. Maybe there was a timepiece that could sit in the center? It's a 24 hour dial, though.

 

The clock would be sitting on the logo, and I can't see a company doing that. Whoever they were, they were trying to get their global status across.

 

Going clockwise, the cities seem mostly to be in time zones one hour apart - although there are a couple that are 2 hours and/or in the same zone(???) I don't know if daylight saving time has anything to do with that.

The only US cities I see are Anchorage, LA, Denver, Chicago & NY - each one hour different from the next.


p.s. The design in the center looks like a sun over a mountain to me, but I don't recognize it as a logo of any company in particular.

 

Something to do with radio transmission around the world?
Reminds me of a radio dial with a logo resembling the RKO logos, not the same, but a similar idea:

Did notice that, unlike for the Pacific, there is nowhere to read the time in the middle of the Atlantic, making one gap.

 

I doubt whoever did this had an office in the Azores.

 

Was there an insurance company called Sun America that had the sun on top of a pyramid or am I hallucinating it?

 

There was one once, but this isn't a logo I can connect with them.

 

It's always been there, and the way it's glued down I think it's going to stay there. It's some sort of foam and was put there in the factory.

 

The middle looks familiar to me...jogs a distant memory. But doesn't jog it enough! Seems like it is a company logo, but I haven't been able to identify which one. Found out there are several companies with mountain peaks in their logos. Who knew?
