Does anyone have any further information about this type of stool including it's age?
I'm thinking of stripping the remainder of the stain off it and then oiling it. IMG_20200819_105224.jpg IMG_20200819_105231.jpg

Think the black "stain" is old discolored varnish. Sanding will remove it but I don't recommend sanding antiques unless absolutely necessary. You lose the patina of old wood in the process and the piece will look new. Stripping will remove it but some of the dark color will end up actually staining the wood. I don't think this is necessarily a bad thing. Once stripped, you can even out the color with a wood stain if necessary.

great advice I agree entirely I don't want to lose the patina and I don't mind if there's remnants of stain as long as overall it's lightened up a bit.
how would you recommend to strip it? do I just paint paint stripper on it and then scrub it off?

Paint stripper will be the fastest way. Lacquer thinner should do the job but only takes a bit off at a time. Gives you more control and less mess.

People have been talking about methylated spirits and fine steel wool. Would that work?
And what instrument should be used?

methylated spirits would work as well. I would just start with a rag. Hopefully, the finish will just melt away. Any scraping should be done with a wood tool. Steel wool could be used as you get near the end.
