I have a rather large African comb and was wondering if anyone might be able to identify the origin. It is carved from bone and is roughly 9 inches in length. If the pencil markings are to be believed, it was either made or collected in 1927.

    Thanks in advance!

It is beautiful. I can't see the material very well, is it ivory?

I don't see any Schreger lines so I'm assuming that it is carved from bone rather than ivory.

Yes, in that case it is bone. Phew.
My guess is W Africa or DR Congo, but 2manybooks will probably have to correct me.

Doubt it's related but that is the date Charles Lindberg landed in Paris.

I am afraid I can't be much more specific. Non-representational designs are harder to place. My first impression was that it reminded me of the designs on so-called Kasai velvets - raffia textiles produced by the Kuba. But it could just as easily be West African, possibly Ghana.

The Kuba are what I had in mind when I mentioned DR Congo. I used to have a Kuba cup with similar carving.
I also considered Nigerian Benin, which also has such designs, although often as a border with human figures on top.
