Featured African? Hippo surfing clay sculpture

    hi folks

    something i found at a bootsale at the weekend for 50p

    think its all handmade, dont think al lot of age

    quite large made of solid clay (a small wave piece broke of on journey back)

    presuming african, but not much else, cant find anything online like it

    any info would be super

    is hippo surfing a known sport in Africa ????? :nailbiting::woot::);):p

    any thoughts appreciated

    African subject matter, but I doubt it is African made. At least, it is not a traditional style or technique.

    Beautifully carved and very interesting Charlie ! Id guess Japanese,just from the skill of the carving but thats just a guess.

    Interesting, thanks tmb and john. I didn't think the figures looked particularly African made

    It is cool and has some nice detail. However not to be negative,but also looks alot like the apparent ‘amusing’ clay sculptures (or sometimes stained resin or composite) I have seen them sell as gifts in the larger tobacco shops as home pub or bar paraphernalia.

    Either way a interesting discussion piece and a bargain at only 50p.

    Yeah I thought that at first when I saw it, but definitely clay, it's far more brittle and fragile than resin

    Had to glue back a wave chunk off the back that broke off

    "HAND BUILT" - is another term I used to use for making this type of clay art.
