Featured Age & Manufacturer of Crock ?

Here's a crock i just found at a garage sale-$8.00.It's not marked-stenciled or painted,but couldn't turn down the price.It's 10 inches tall,stamped '3' (3 Gal. ?). Any ideas about age and manufacture ?

More likely 3 quart...or liter; a gallon is 231 cubic inches.
Mostly judging by the bottom, it appears to have been used on a wood stove...or perhaps been in a fire. Nice piece of clay, Bosko...

 

It also looks to me to have various writing/letters/words in the areas I've lightened! Maybe try putting a magnifying loupe on those places????

I generally expect a 3 gallon crock to be around 10 or 11 inches tall, depending on diameter, and a stamped or painted numeral to be the capacity in gallons - you might try filling it with measured water to see the capacity...
