Another little charity shop broken jewellery box find . c14ct.
Small ding to the stone on one side but otherwise beautiful!. About an inch long.
I'm going to replace the pin but what length would it have been originally?. Would it have been one of those extra long ones or is it more modern?. I want to do it right.
    Thanks for looking :)

Looks like the stone was replaced with the banded agate. Probably had a faceted stone mounted in a pegged gold setting.

Please can you explain a bit more?
    What is a pegged setting?
What tells you this isn't the original stone?- Are the setting and the stone from two different periods?
    Thankyou :)

The hole in the bottom of the stone would have been for a peg/tube mounting. The bezel looks like it was straightened to remove a stone and not burnished back to hold the agate tightly. see link for example of pegged setting..... https://brocksjewelers.com/product/...open-back-oval-shape-black-onyx-diamond-ring/

I think this is "bulls eye" agate.

I’ve got a couple of these bullseye agate brooches somewhere. Mine are set in silver though. I always thought they were victorian with a longer pin.
Is there a gap around the bezel or is it black agate KSW? I can’t tell.

No gap, it fits tightly. The black is the stone below the white band if that makes sense.

Ah, I see what you mean now, I thought you were describing this setting as a pegged setting, not that the agate had come out of one. That makes more sense to me now- Thankyou.

That's what I was thinking but as I'm about to get OH to put a new pin in it, I'd like to get the right length.

I'm sure the stone is original to the setting. Here is a photo of one from the internet.
As you can see here, the double rope bezels are nearly identical to your pin. I love it! When you get the pin repaired it will be awesome!

Ooh, that is so similar. Is that on a for sale listing @stracci?.
And is there a photo of the pin?

Brown eye? Is the top and bottom band brown? What color is the bottom of the stone on the back of the setting.

Where the dark stone meets the white band it looks brown which you can see on the photos above. The back looks black but I think it's very dark brown.
Houseful, that's beautiful!.Look at the colours in the banding!.

I’ll try and find my pieces, upstairs somewhere, seeing yours has awakened my interest in them again, I’ll post them in the finds.
The Victorian agate bead necklaces seem to fetch good money.

I've got some banded agate beads but I have no idea of they are Victorian or were made yesterday.
I'll dig them out and have a look at them.

I suppose the clasp will be the best indicator. This one on RLane for $2.5k looks as if it’s been restrung.

I've one like that, the stone is original to it. Needs a long pin.

With the drilled hole and the crack and chip on the back,I would guess there are 2 stones in your setting. Backside onyx and front side sardonyx.
