Featured Aimo Okkolin Riihimäen Lasi Oy - large heavy vase with cut roses

I really love this one - found it today at Goodwill of all places. It's really big, and really heavy. It's 16" high, 9" in diameter at the widest part. The glass is an inch thick at the rim, weighs 17 pounds! Cut all around with roses. Signed on the bottom "Aimo Okkolin Riihimäen Lasi Oy '46". I've since discovered that Aimo Okkolin was a designer at Riihimaki glass in Finland from the 30's till the 70's. I haven't found another Okkolin vase that looks like this one online...yet.

Did you google what is written after his name? I can’t quite read it.

I messed up the transcription a bit - it actually reads:

Riihimäen Lasi Oy - A. Okkolin '46"

The first part is the glass company/factory - second part his name - then date '46. There may have been something else written above Riihimaen but the wear has obscured it.

Holy cow, Aaron! That's one hunk of a chunk of glass! Lovely!

 

It really is - the pictures don't do it justice. I'm sitting here giving it a good wipedown with a microfiber cloth and it's just gorgeous - can't believe I found it

 

Aaron of the "good eye" ! Just stunning. Ive found a few nice bits at goodwill lately as well,maybe they are slacking up on checking!

 

After that lode of silver I found last week and now this - maybe they are. This one was yet to be shelved - I caught it on a cart coming out of the back room - didn't take much of a good eye - it was more like WHAM - look at that!

 

I’m wondering after seeing the others, if this was a custom piece, or made for an exhibition. Not in the link above, nothing like it.

 

Yeah I haven't found the shape or the decoration in any of the other Okkolin pieces online. There's a book on Riihimäen glass- closest copy is in the Library of Congress in DC - but I might swing by there sometime in the next couple weeks to go through it.

Riihimäen, there’s on online gallery. Naturally yours was not there. It seems like a good place to ask though.
