Featured Am I 30s or 50s ?

    Hi all . It was perfect weather today here in n. fla so I went to the flea market for the first ime in years . Apparently 1000s of others had the same idea too ! Picked up this lovely thing , one of those had to haves . Its 4 1/2 high and 4 wide ,Im guessing Mexican ? Id love to know what its made of , and is the pink coral ?     Mexican obsidian with abalone shell. Not sure what the pink is.

    Neither 1930s or 1960s. Much, much newer i.e. recent.

    My only experience of obsidian were the pebbles called Apache tears... until the carved pieces from Mexico started showing up. I was pretty much under the impression that obsidian was hard to come by. Not so. Mexico is the 3rd largest source, Oregon and the Rift Valley in Africa having larger deposits. Here is a volcanic flow in the Newbury Volcanic Monument:

    170 million cubic yards of obsidian and pumice, and not that old at about 1300 years (about the time of the Viking raids in England).
    And this isn't the only deposit by far.
