Featured Amethyst Vase Painted Man who is he ?

Vase measures 9" - Does this hand painted man have any significance or can he be identified ? Name next to him looks like GAD

DH said his wild-eyed guess would be a character from the Katzenjammer Kids cartoons.

Smoking jacket, fez on his head, high collar and cravat - does look familiar.

 

I think the "fez on head" was Sydney Greenstreet...

 

A character from Maggie and Jigs comics? Jigs knew a lot of eccentrics.

Good try but I don't think the one on the vase is him.

 

Hi,
I know the character but can not for the life of me remember his name. I think the gad is egad. I think the first e got rubbed off. I will ponder this all day and in the middle of the night I will remember.

You might be thinking of Major Hoople from the "Our Boarding House" comic strip? Even today the local newspaper here uses him as sort of a mascot for a football score prediction game they run. I don't think the comic exists any more.

I'm posting from my phone, and embedding pictures from the web is a multi-step process that I am too lazy to deal with right now. If you search his name, @Suzy60us , you will find some pics to compare. I see similarities and he often said "Egad!" and other such interjections.
