Silver and ebony bottle stand with something utterly indecipherable. Gah.

This is a bit like Sherlock Holmes calling in Inspector Lestrade for his opinion.

    That's not English. French?

French maker would be in a diamond shape, though - not the lozenge with pointed ends this one seems to have.

Been looking to match up that other "splotch" and getting no where.

Thank you for the compliment, af.;)

I don't think it's English either, but damned if I can work out what.

I haven't had any luck on these marks either after editing them to size, etc... That other mark that Baker called a "splotch" is probably the key to country of origin. Using extreme imagination, real extreme, I can slightly imagine a possible Dutch sword hallmark. Now this is no doubt a figment of my imagination, but thought I'd throw it out there.

I had the same first impression, Susan. But when I zoomed on it, that impression evaporated. But I think it came up because we had a Dutch piece with similarly shaped maker's mark and sword very recently.

I suppose we shouldn't discount the idea completely, though. Would ebony wood be readily available to the Dutch - as in one of the Dutch colonial outposts?

Aha. Ebony would absolutely be available. That does look very like, even down to the dashed decoration.

Gee, I'm surely glad your memory is better than mine, Sue! The marks in this thread are definitely similar to those in the other. I didn't pay that other thread any attention because AJ had it solved quickly. Here are pics of both set of marks in the same orientation side by side for comparison.

Yup, I think we're sorted, as they say. Huge thanks ladies.

You're welcome, but the credit should all go to Sue, Bakers..., who pointed out the similarity with that other thread.

See, you don't need me at all.;)
And yes, there were many dark hardwood species in the former Dutch colonies, none of them true ebony, but very much like it.
    Here are some Dutch swords:

'Zilver' is of course silver, 'heden' means present day. The double sword is for composite pieces.
