This came with a bunch of "apothecary" bottles. It isn't round, so it won't work as a stopper. What might it be?

Maybe the neck of what it went into wasn't round either?

    Looks like a muddler.
Flat end to crush herbs or pills.

    That sounds like a possibility.

    About 3" long.

A stopper for several different sizes of bottles? Like some present day wine corks.

Is there anything on the /'.; [cat nearly rolled off the desk] flat side or just blank?

    The top is just flat.

Maybe the "top" is actually the "bottom" of it ???

Dayum, I think it might be a chandelier spike without the brass hardware.

Could be. I was thinking a "topper" for something.

Think Rayo is right. Is it possible this is the lid to something rather than a stopper? I see what could be a little ridge running around the flat end of the type that keeps a lid seated at the right height. Like VR's suggestion too.
