Just bought this online, think it may be bronze with a removable iron insert, about 11 inches long and about 6 inches tall. Centrepiece for flowers?

    It looks like a planter.

I'd be going all over that looking for a WMF mark. Are you sure the liner isn't zinc?

I'm picking it up Monday or Tuesday, not sure what material liner is, just thought it was iron.

AJ, yes it could be a planter, just thought it looked a bit ornate and might be designed as a centrepiece

It might be zinc - usually used for liners meant to hold ice.

I understand this is brass, but maybe pins down as French possibly.

    Not Brass, but Pot Metal.

More likely to be spelter than pot metal.

I guess we are talking about the Chairish item, I dont think the OP item is spelter or pot metal

Aquitaine Is What It IS! But NEVER BORED!

My FIRST thought was: Goodness what happened to the inside of it...... but reading further pretty much explained that.....I think:rolleyes::rolleyes:

Given the bloom on the liner I'm more inclined to think it is zinc rather than iron. But tbh, I'm looking to get a feel of the outer pot!

Isn't pot metal also called spelter?

Spelter Copper Zinc alloy or Brass and Lead

Pot Metal white metal, or die-cast zinc—is a colloquial term that refers to alloys of low-melting point metals.

The term Pot Metal is rarely used here.

It's used here for low-end 1930s costume jewelry and "lead" toy soldiers. It's whatever low-melt metal found its way into the pot, often lead, zinc and antimony.

Yes, it's that bloom that makes me think zinc - I've several old baths and pots I use as planters and they look the same.

davey, as Ruth says, if you collect costume jewellery, the pot metal term is quite common.

Just got it home, the liner is non magnetic, black coating with bloom internally and externally.

Outer is probably bronze, made in two casting welded together

length including handles 13", maximum rim height 4 3/4"

How hefty is the liner? It does sound like zinc. Bronze is good.
