Featured And now for something completely difference, what is this glass piece?

A brief backstory: My sister's mother-in-law was an antiques dealer. She passed away about 30 years ago. Sister's husband was an only child and they inherited all the antiques the MIL kept, collected, etc and often repaired. BIL passed away 2 months ago and sister has a house full of antiques. None of which she plans on selling. I was staying with sister and we got curious about one of the pieces she has. So, I knew where I could get answers for her, obviously. So the question is, what was this used for? Would it be called a compote? Looks like it should have a glass? ladle or spoon. The glass seems too delicate to have held anything hot, BWDIK. It is 15 1/2" from the foot to the top of finial. The "bowl" itself is 6 1/2" high and 6 3/4" in diameter. The notch is 1" by 1". Last picture is the bottom of the foot.

Preserves, jam or sugar. Isn't that pretty.

It is a pretty piece. None of my guesses included jam or sugar. It seemed too big and elegant for those. She will be pleased to know this.

As an aside, the MIL had a substantial collection of flow blue. Sis is well aware of the decreased value but it certainly is a beautiful group. I think she (someday) wants to see if she can donate it to a museum. I will add gratuitous pictures if anyone would like to see.

I was thinking a bowl for trifle but it may not be the right size.

Stuff it with dark cloth, or maybe cold black coffee to get clearer pictures of the decoration. Don't fill it with hot liquid.

Sure, show the flow blue. Start a new thread for it. Always like eye candy.

I can't take any more pictures at the moment, she's in NY and I am in Florida. She does not have a phone that takes pictures unfortunately and doesn't have a digital camera. We're trying to talk her into getting a smart phone but she's dealing with a lot of other things at the moment.
