This brooch is marked Kautokeino Juhls and Metal X. I found one just like it, but it was in sterling. What the heck is metal x?

Doesn't X stand for the unknown quantity? We may never know.

You can try to ask directly from them. https://www.juhls.no/en
I really like their designs but never saw one in base metal.

The 'METAL' just indicates it's bronze - have seen other letters or symbols on some other Juhls pieces (silver as well), perhaps something like a journeyman mark. Hopefully they'll get back to you and explain...

    Thanks Lucille and Cheryl.

I have to admit I kind of liked the sound of Metal X. :D

    Hello

The one you have is made of bronze and it was probably made during the 80’s, maybe earlier. We can’t say anything more precise than that I’m afraid.

The "Holy" letter M with a crown on top for Virgin Mary was used since the Middle Ages and Catholic times. After the reformation, the symbolism was forgotten so imaginative transformations like this could evolve. Often the letters M or A ("Ave Maria") were put in a ring so that they could serve as a eyelet. The ring that hangs in the front does not have a specific meaning.

These kinds of jewelry has been used by Sami people for hundreds of years, even before the Sami was christened.

Please forgive the hijack, but I love the Sami-inspired pieces by Juhls, as well as Regine's beautiful Brutalist jewelry (to my thinking, a difficult discipline to do well), and have some of their spoons in my collection. They're on my vast list of places to visit if I ever manage to do a Scandinavian trip - this is the gallery, so stunning with its architecture, rugs and mosaic work:

And their version of a 'kuksa' drinking cup, about 8" long, holds 2/3 cup:
