Hey everyone! So, my latest obsession this last year has been handwoven rugs. I've been diving into learning more about different weaving styles, mainly interested in MENA rugs, but being in Arizona, I also find some lovely SW and Navajo rugs.

Wanted to post this rug I purchased for $100 from a local seller. The original owner was an antiques dealer. It looks like your typical art deco era Chinese rug, I'm guessing 1920s-1930s, but what i find unique about this one is the bright magenta hue and the inclusion of thorny vines (squash?). I haven't seen another art deco or Nichols rug with this specific portrayal of vegetation, although I have spotted a few lovely magenta ones in a similar tone.

What I love is, in low lighting, the magenta tone turns red. So, it fits my red-gold-black-emerald decor, but in daylight, the pink tones pop out, and provide a flash of color to the room.

Hand-woven, based on the variance in the stitching style. I can provide clearer images of the fringe and bottom, if need be. Edit: The fringe actually appears to be sewn-on.

(Also, the vines look more serpentine than I've seen in other art deco rugs, and have to wonder if this is transitional period, 1910s-1920s, because there is a very slight art nouveau whimsy, in my mind, based on the vines' shapes)

Sadly, there is a hole in it. I've been thinking of trying to repair it myself, or at least prevent the hole from growing. Since I paid so little, it's not worth taking it to a professional to repair. I know that the hole affects value, but from my research, this rug is worth well above $100, even with the damage. It measures probably 14x10 or 12x10. Over 100 pounds, I'm guessing, just based on how unwieldly it is to try moving it myself. Probably closer to 150-200, just hard to tell, since I haven't tried weighing it.

According to my research, most rugs from this era are 100% wool. I have two other art deco Chinese rugs, but they don't have the same satiny sheen that this one has; I'm wondering if this might be silk over a wool base. I'd love your thoughts!

Edit: I got curious about the thorny vines, and I found a very similar one, in a different color scheme, but with a similar style, for $8200. From this listing, theirs appears to be a modern reproduction, that can be executed in different sizes.

But, the person I bought this from, told me that their mom (the original owner, and a former antique dealer) owned it for years. So, I don't think it's a reproduction. And, with the rug on this site, the variation in color on the leaves appears more muted, which makes them seem less 3-dimensional. But the similarity in patterns, is striking.

Yeah, and it's extremely heavy, so I'm guessing wool!!
I have a few rugs (much smaller), that I think might be silk, but they are very thin and light-weight, even compared to rugs of a similar size. In comparison, this is the heaviest rug I've moved in ages.
I'm just mystified by the sheen it has.

I contacted them to see if their rug is an original antique, but they mentioned in the listing that multiple sizes are available, so I assume theirs is a reproduction. Will update once I hear back!!

a fine wool , will have , still have oils in it which could throw a sheen.
I have 3 Chinese silk rugs....... they are all dull..... but these's still a sparkle... in the sunshine !

Love the quality of vintage and antique rugs!! I'm mainly interested in Persian, Kazakh, Turkish, and Morrocan rugs, but the two other art deco Chinese rugs I've found are beautifully woven and/or (like this one) incredibly plush and luxurious.

I'll never understand how people will go out and buy a repro, usually for 1x-2x+ what they can find a quality vintage or antique rug at auction or on second-hand websites.
