    Hii everybody,

Last week I posted a blue glass set.
    I've received it yesterday.

I must say that the condition is a little dissapointing.
    (Lots of scratches)
See pictures to judge it for yourselves.

Also, some point the glass is untouched, and some there are spots on the surface.

Is this some kind of glass disease?

It was believed to be opaline glass. (Ca. 1850)
Could somebody confirm this, based on these new pictures?

    Thank you very much!

On the sixth picture you can see it a little clearer.

Most parts of the dish (underside) are smooth.
And at some parts you can see these little dots/cracks on the surface.

And this bottle. It's very flat.

I think this is a chatelaine. (Only without chain, and it's attaching points)

That is a pity. Did the seller mention it? If you want to reclaim, is there any way to do that?
If it doesn't have any way to attach a chain, it probably wasn't meant for a chatelaine.
But I've found something else. If you look at all the pictures, you can see the little shell cart was made specifically for the bottle, as a novelty item.

The inspiration if not the make could be Bohemia glass from late 19th century. Hard to say when not in hand, but Harrach used these crenelated rims a lot, not sure if the plates belong to the other pieces, this could be several items which were part of a tableware set. First image is similar to your glass and the rims, and a combo picture of a green and white, painted Harrach set in the Bohemian Glass Passau Museum in Germany.

    Very nice!

Reclaiming unfortunately is not possible. And I wasn't planning to do so really.
I bought it at an auction. Where there are "watching days" I didn't attend.

It was just a gamble that... went wrong? went okay?

    You tell me :p

I paid €100 for the set.

I have no idea what causes that other than old age and maybe a dishwasher....
    The color is gorgeous.

I'm just affraid that it's not opaline.
BEcause I expected the glass to more dark with depth.
    How do I explain that?

It looks very light and transparent.

I'll make some pictures with more light.

Especially with the bonbonière I had the feeling that it was too light.
Now I've measure it.. and the glass on this one is a little thinner.
That also made color a little lighter.

I still believe they belong to eachother, since this one als o has the seems cracks in it.

I've tried to make a couple of pictures through a loupe,
and these are miniature cracks on the surface.

R, you probably know more about opaline glass than most of us.
To me as a glass ignoramus that crazing looks like it could be natural 'weathering' through use and age. Is that something you've seen before?

The first time you posted the set, I did have a feeling that the scent bottle wasn't part of it. I think it is a separate, gorgeous little thing, to be carried around in a purse, hence the rounded flat shape. Or to be put in a novelty display like the shell cart. The colour seems different too, but that could be the pictures.

The color is simply fantastic. It reminds me of chalaine glass but I can not find any info to back that up.
I collect delphite and chalaine glass. It comes in so many different shades.

I had an opaline blue glass ashtray that I sold awhile back.
Sorry can't be of more help.

The scent bottle is the same color. And also has the same crazing.

Anyway, it could be easily sold on it's own.
It wouldn't make the set incomplete.
Plus, I think that the bottle is the most easy to sell.

Can I ask you guys what would be a reasonable price for it?

The cap is loose from the glass. Maybe I have to fill it up with something.
I have no idea with what. Maybe a piece of paper. Or should I glue it?

Price wise I was thinking about €125,00 for the bottle.

    Thank you :)

I never heard of that glass before. Just googled it,
but it seems more like milk glass. They also call it jade glass.

Can't remember the name. It was ".... opaline".

That was/is the "more affordable" opaline glass.

I have been involved with European glass for 3 years now, and it's such a complex and vast subject, the opaline category on it's own, was made for several decades in many countries and I am not talking about the later reproductions.
My area of knowledge is the Art Deco bright colored glass. So, can't help here. Wish I could. Value, you can experiment and wait till the fall, the best time to sell imo. :)

More research, google via image category and copy/paste "French Blue Opaline Pontil Octagonal Art Glassware". Comparison for glass, color texture etc may lead you something.
