Looks like a marriage of parts to me, Jacques. The mounting bracket of the brass piece seems wrong for the area on the wood.

Let's see what others have to say.

I rather like the carved wood piece.

I'd agree with brass and would call it a sconce.

I understand you...But if the candle holder is straight in the middle the all piece looks balanced and originally made..Fittings and connections looks original and made specially for the wooden base....I think..Not 100 % sure...Hope some other views and comments will help...Thank you anway...But still wondering from where and when it had been done...jb

Aquitaine Is What It IS! But NEVER BORED!

Does it hang at an angle? I ask as the candle wouldn't be straight up on either side the way it is showing! Does the candle holder swing to either side? Curious piece, but liking the carving too!!

No it is movable from left middle or right and the candle holder is always straight ...Very curious ....I think it has been made during xvi or xvii th century...But need more experts views on that piece....

Take a close look at the area on the wood where I've indicated in yellow. It looks like something was mounted there at some point.

Why do you think it was used in a church?

I'm not sure, Jacques. A couple of folks that may not poke their heads in metalware may have some ideas: @verybrad and @afantiques

Good question....I am quite religious from Basque area in France and living in Ireland now..Broad up in an old religious old fashion school long time ago..Where I could see such type of items around in old churches...Then I have been collecting as well those old religious items that I have bought during my several visit around the world...Long time ago....

The quality of the woodwork far exceeds the metal. These pieces were not made for one another but a marriage as @sabre123 mentioned and others noted above.

Thanks...Understood...So bizarre ...The carved wood looks as old as the brass fittings..So why this mariage..??
