IMG_2264.JPG IMG_2253.JPG FullSizeRender.jpg FullSizeRender.jpg FullSizeRender.jpg FullSizeRender.jpg IMG_2259.JPG Hello - I have an antique end table that I inherited. It is quite beat up but I am interested in finding out what it is, what wood, and if there is any value.

    Dimensions:
25' long (front to back) x 16 3/4" wide x 27" high (top of top half shelf to bottom) and 18" high (top of main shelf to bottom).

Please forgive the photos. I only have my iPhone where I am.

    Thanks!

Looks like 1950s or 1960s plywood with a veneer.

Probably sentimental value only, but it's a useful little piece of furniture after all.

Looks like a mahogany end table to me. Possibly as early as the 40s, on in to the 50s. Value is minimal.

Oh, and vintage rather than antique as under 100 years old.

I wrote a reply on Wednesday but I think it didn't post because I wasn't logged in. I'll do it again.

Thank you all for your replies. Using the term, 'telephone table,' I searched on Google and discovered that this piece is called a step end table. I was surprised at the post identifying the wood as plywood covered by veneer and was very interested to see verybrad's assessment as mahogany. I am now thinking that the table is mahogany with the lowest shelf being plywood covered with veneer. Possible? The piece was in my family probably from before the 1950's. It looks like a much better quality piece in real life than the photos indicate, although, of course, it has a lot of nicks and shows wear.

    Thanks again!

Anything's possible, really, and I don't doubt it's from the end of the 1940s or 1950s in your family. I was going to say I think the veneer is mahogany, your photos of the edges aren't detailed enough for me to see what's going on with the wood. Veneer was and is still made in strips for glueing to the edges of plywood, and not just in sheets.

It also appears to be missing a drawer in the top, where there is a rail on each side.

I have a basement full of tables like that. (Actually maybe 5 or 6 sets of two.) Most we bought at sales for $5.00 or less.

I hope they help regarding the issue of veneer or not. The lowest shelf is definitely veneer as you can see where some cracked off on the bottom of the shelf. Thanks!

Top is definitely veneer from what I can see from last picture.

Looks to be mahogany veneer over solids.

Thanks! One last question. Do you think the curved side piece of the upper step is solid mahogany?

    Thanks!

    Also looks to be veneer.
