Found on a metal detect session in Aughton, Ormskirk area. Can't see any markings, looks fairly rustic. 1 bent leg and a hole on underside. Fairly solid weighing in at 2gms. Any thoughts on age and origin?

    Welcome.

    Is it real gold ?

It looks like it is from a charm bracelet, possibly Asian, Indian.

Welcome to the boards, Ian! Agree that it looks like it's from a charm bracelet. Have you checked to see if a magnet will stick to it?

It is really sweet, Ian, and welcome.
Could you clean your wee elephant and look through a loupe to see if the indentation on its hind leg (hip, bum) is a mark?

No magnet will stick to it, pushing me further towards gold?

It's a good sign if the magnet won't stick.

Question: Isn't ammonia a good way to further tell if its gold or brass, by making it cleaner? Should gold have a desirable patina? Does brass always improve with one?

    No.
Ammonia is used as a non abrasive cleaner on silver.

It's well known that ammonia is also a gold or brass cleaner, it can clean tarnish off silver also. Not sure if it does anything bad to them though.

Ammonia blackens silver. It's not too clever with gold, either.

Good old silver polish will help or better yet a polishing cloth. I've found goofier things that were high-karat gold, so it never hurts to look. That indent does look like a punch mark.

Don't laugh, but I use plain, white toothpaste to clean gold, it works like a treat!
