Can anyone tell me anything about this plan chest, which I bought at an antiques fair in Brighton a few years ago?

It's 58cm wide, and 53cm tall, and has 14 drawers, 12 of which are numbered by hand, with some other smaller numbers next to them, such as 3D, 1D and 1/2D, which I presume refers to pre-decimal currency.

I'd just love to know how old it is, what it might have been used for, and anything about it, really, if anyone can help!

    Thanks, Matt

    Hi Matt.

Its a coin cabinet, too small for plans and maps.
That is why it has the pre decimal coin denominations on it.

    I would say 20-30's

    They fetch good money.

Collectors of gem impressions, such as those made by James Tassie, also used cabinets like this & contents were catalogued. However, absence of contents now inclines me to coins.

I already have and use this 32 drawer cabinet.

And I just recently did a 280 mile round trip to buy this smaller one, I'm restoring it.

The OP's looks like homebrew, aka shed work. Odds are it was built for purpose by some guy in his garden shed.

I think my second cabinet was, several types of wood cobbled together.
    The OP's looks like Pine.

Not to mention plywood. I generally like shed work better - more personality.
