I combated a terrible week with some flea market hunting today and managed to snag these up for 7.5 euros each. Both have some obvious damage, but I think the brooch can still be worn, even without the safety lever. No hallmarks. I was wondering if it might be silver anyway. thumbnail (14).jpg thumbnail (12).jpg thumbnail (13).jpg

The putti are always up to something, aren't they?

    Haha, right?
I haven't seen them dancing in a circle before, so this is something new :)

    Very nice, barn.
I see some yellowish spots on the back. Maybe those will come off in soapy water.
The missing safety lever wouldn't bother me, but you will have to mention it in a listing of course.

The buckle is lovely, but not AH, the style is not flamboyant enough. I suspect it is part of a German regional costume.
I blame the parents. They are never around, are they.
Putti love to dance in a circle, celebrating the absence of parental control.
Seriously though, it is quite common and always attractive.

Thank you. I'll see if I can clean off the yellowish spots. Is there any particular name for this style of brooch? Am I right to think it's 1890s-1900s?

I'll see if I can find out if the buckle is for a particular region of dress.

It is Baroque Revival, although hardly anyone uses the term.
In Germany it is Historismus of course. Love that term, it covers so much. You could use Historic Revival instead of Historismus, but it doesn't conjure up the same image imo.

Ca 1890s would be my thought too.

No buckle,it's a pin/brooch for loose weave sash, shirt, etc. it is a ring brooch, the style has been around for centuries and used in many countries... https://www.google.com/search?q=rin...vpvjAhUCQ80KHVW9A20Q_AUIESgC&biw=1505&bih=891

Neat haul, Barn!!! To ME, the Putti pin/brooch sure LOOKS like Silver on the FRONT, but sure looks like it's been coated with something on the back........BWDIK!!!!!:joyful::joyful::joyful: Maybe could be marks hiding?????

    Thanks!
Yeah, the texture on the back looks different than the front. It's strange. Maybe some sort of coating of another metal was added...
