Antique barrel I inherited has lettering VPA camp And what looks to be probably Vietnamese writing

    Couple of thoughts - in the late 40's and during the war with France (ending 1954) the indigenous army was called the PAVN. Did the person you received this from ever indicate the time frame any more closely than "the 40s?" Did you ever get a story about how this item came to be in his possession?

    In addition, the Vietnamese language is not written with Chinese characters (which is what the column of writing looks like to me.) Since the Communist Chinese were supporters of Vietnamese liberty from France, the barrel could have actually originated there.
