Looks like a game box, Chinese?

 

Mah jong tiles, maybe multi-game box?

 

The close-up of the underside decoration shows people playing chess. The empty sections under the board halves would hold the pieces.

 

Probably for chess/checkers.

Not Mahjong. I've seen enough mahjong sets and boxes to know how they're stored and what they look like.

I've got three sets of my own at home.

 

They're playing chess on the cover, so odds on it held chess pieces.

 

I doubt the box would sell for much

It may not, you're probably right about that. But it's still rather attractive. I could imagine someone wanting it just for the decorative value, if nothing else.

 

I recognise many of the symbols from what appear to be printed pages as those used in Mah Jonng for dragons and winds, among others, so there seems to be some Mah Jonng connection, possibly a miniature travelling set combined with a chess or chequers set.

It is a fine looking box. I'd value it at the equivalent of $100 to $150 but this is pretty meaningless since I am in England.
