IMG_8474.JPG IMG_8473.JPG IMG_8475.JPG hello! I've been trying to research what this is, but not having a lot of luck. From the marks I think it is made by Elkington, but wondering if it is a letter opener or something else? And does anyone recognise the symbols on it? Thanks so much for any help! IMG_8476.JPG

Page-turner? Looks too thick and chunky to be a letter-knife.

    Hello, and welcome MrsWindsor.
    Could you give the size?
It looks like it is concave, if it is big enough I'd say a shoe horn.
It has some connection with a monarchy that was ruled by someone whose name started with I. Could be a latinized J. There were several Isabellas, Iwans, Johns, Jans.

That looks broken on one end to me. Photo of the blunt end, please.

    I'd think shoe horn.

As to the decoration, the type of crown has meaning. Coronets are used to symbolise ranks in the British aristocracy, but they were and are also used for things like hotels and clubs. Crowns are also used for military and regimental emblems. That's a British crown with fleur de lis. The most probable thing is a club or regiment.

Given that it's silver plate, it's unlikely to have belonged to anyone wildly significant.

And because you've said that......I'll go the xtra mile...to explain why it's not....
matter of fact ...I'll leave it to someone with more experience than I.

Oh...& it's a link....I know...:sorry:....but it's a good read for anyone who has or want's to collect in this area..............

Thanks Komo, that was fascinating!!! AND have stuck the link in my "Research Folder"!! When I said "page splitter" I was thinking/meaning an instrument that would CUT the pages (I was agreeing with Johnnycb09), not a 'page turner', which I had heard of but could never understand the reasoning for!!!! And from reading, it sounds like 'page turners' are more of a figment of someone's Victorian Imagination???!!!

    Hi,
Page turners are still used everyday. Go to any Jewish temple and you will see people using the page turners on the Torah. Otherwise the pages of handwritten 100+ year old scrolls would we ruined by the acid on your finger tips.

oh Greg.....you need to look closer...........or be Jewish !! :hilarious:

The Torah is a long rolled up scroll .....that you're not allowed to touch because it is so holy......so when reading it a " Pointer " is used......

    Hi,
Blame in on the "green snow". I certainly do know better. I have to learn to shut up when suffering like this.

Torah Yod it isn't.(LOL) The page turner shown with Hebrew on it probably says Souvenir of Jerusalem or something similar.

Close enough - Israeli or Palestine souvenir piece. We have a large Jewish population in these parts, and I've found other items made the same way. Interesting about the paper knives/turners however.
