   It is about 1"long and about a 1/2" thick. The center looks like it is made of cardboard-like material dusted with charcoal. The outside is made of soft plastic.

   Some quick research leads me to believe that this is from the inside of an old battery. Here is a link to a query with some that look like yours.
   
   Found these at an old dump site in New Hampshire inside of an old tin can. Most items at the dump site seem to be from 1930-50. What are these things? Thanks! : r/whatisthisthing
